The built in 8' measuring tape is a novel little addition that you'll find nominal at best. The colossal giggle factors about this item are realized soon after you use it for the first time. The unit obviously has to calibrate every time you search for your member, and it does so with a rather loud high pitched squeal. Yes, it only lasts about 5 seconds, but it does this EVERY TIME! Combine that with the fact that this is the same squeal it uses to tell alert you to the fact that you have found your post and you have a folly of squealing unpleasantness that is sure to dismay (not to mention deflating any hopes of getting lucky later in the evening, as we all know the negative affect loud squeals can have on our intentions).Now for the topper; the unit's accompanying dialogue tells you can "mark" the magic spot once it is detected. It really does look and feel like complete junk.On the upside, though, I've had mine for at least five years. I bought it because it was very, very cheap, and my past experiences with stud finders had left me with the impression that they were generally of questionable value ... I found that knocking on the drywall to be much more accurate. This cheap little unit showed me how wrong I was. Even without nails or wires, this gadget is accurate enough to show me both edges of the stud. Every time. I do have one caveat ... there is a "glitch" that led me to believe that this model was also garbage for a while, until I figured out how to use it. It has a "deep scan" mode; now, I generally use a stud finder to find studs behind drywall. "Deep scan" isn't necessary for that. In fact, in my experience, "Deep Scan" *always* reveals something behind the wall... | 15 of 16 people found the following review helpful Better than Stanley's Intellisensor Digiscan Stud Sensor, By PJ (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews This review is from: Zircon 58229 TriScanner Pro SL - Electronic Stud and Metal Locator (Tools & Home Improvement) After an hour of testing at home, I returned the expensive Stanley's Intellisensor Digiscan Stud Sensor. The unit turned on by itself! The multiple beeps were annoying. It can be too sensitive and cautious in it's reading and can give false information where I know there is a stud behind the 1/2 inch gypsum board wall. The live AC wire sensor was constantly on where I know the 14/2 wire was more than 24 inches away from the unit. I needed a consistent unit that can reasonably detect wood and metal behind gypsum board to replace a 15 year old Zircon stud sensor. This product is sold as Zircon's "Contractor Triscanner Pro" at Home Depot in Toronto, Canada. It does the job. It's also $5 cheaper than the LCD readout Intellisensor Digiscan. I'm not buying from this company SOLEY for this reason - I fully intened to purchase a top-of-the-line Triscanner. As a Marketing VP I thought I had seen everything. Very unfortunate to see this. |
