It is very easy to use and grip is very comfortable. I will recommend it to everyone. You do need to buy a 9v battery since it is not included in the purchase. The Zircon is fine. We are now planning to use this to find studs to mount a 50" plasma tv monster on the wall. hopefully the zircon will be reliable. I finally got tired of screwing into hollow cavities. This version not only finds the studs but the CENTER of the studs which makes a BIG difference and saves me a lot of time. The pencil marker feature comes in handy. The one shortcoming in my experience is trying to find studs behind drywall painted in the prior 48 hours with either model. The home center price was 50% more. It's deceiving because it lights up and beeps in such a way that you really feel like it's working! But alas, I've ruined more drywall trying to actually find the studs in spite of this thing. I'll run it across the wall 10 times and mark the spot each time with the nifty built-in pencil marker (the only redeeming quality of this piece of junk) and every mark will land in a different place on the wall so you're left guessing where you think the center is. It's just not consistent or accurate! A contractor friend just told me to stop wasting money on stud finders and get a supercharged magnet--the magnet will tell you exactly where the drywall screws are, which will indicate exactly where the stud is. I think dowsing rods might work as well. If you have a 5/8 inch drywall you are wasting your time. I have tried a couple of these. They just simply don't function as advertised. As this manufacturer is skating so close to being outright fraudulent, it's time to look a different brands. Zircon seems to be the industry leader in this sort of technology, and seems to be a brand I can trust and get good support from. Their website is well maintained. It's designed in USA; assembled in Mexico. I think it's a newer design than the Little Wizard II, since it was first released in April 2007, whereas the Little Wizard II product manual is dated November 2002. Purpose: I bought this primarily for finding staples/screws/nails in old wood I want to reuse, but I'm sure I'll find other uses for it too, like finding things I drop, finding studs and nail lines, etc. Size: It's a little bigger than I imagined it, but that's a good thing - my fears of it being delicate or likely to be broken were completely unfounded. Battery: I only just got this, so I can't comment on battery life, but it's nice that it came with the 9-volt battery already... I do Wind Mitigation inspections which requires a determination of the spacing of nails through plywood into wood trusses. The tool works as expected. I recommend it for this purpose. I also build furniture, so I will be using it to check for nails and metal in reused wood. I haven't had the oportunity yet to try this tool for this purpose. Returned to Amazon within 30 days as the item was little more than an expensive toy. The only way that you could detect metal was by holding the detector 1" (one inch) away from metal, not within 3" as advertised. The scanner came without a 9 volt battery which was indicated by one favorable comment, although when I looked back in Amazon's ad, the battery was not mentioned. Thankfully Amazon promptly handled the return at no charge and refunded my purchase price. I am a professional woodworker and still looking for an affordable good detector for nails and/or metal found in recycled lumber to avoid wrecking planer and sawblades as well as my body. Will continue to purchase from Amazon because of their great return and shipping policy.
