The strength of the magnet used in the stud finder determines how well it works. This Johnson stud finder magnet is stronger(better) than most of this kind. But like all low end (non-electronic) stud finders, it requires understanding how it works to get the quickest results. Sheetrock is nailed up and down each stud in your wall every 6 to 8 inches vertically. Studs are spaced horizontally in the wall every 16", sometime 24". The stud finder magnet will attract to one of these nails in a stud eventually and you will see it in the back and forth magnet behavior as you pass across a stud. First move the stud finder slowly across the wall horizontally while carefully watching for a magnet movement. Since nails are randomly nailed up and down each stud, it is more likely to find a stud on your first pass(try) depending on how many studs you...
